Behind Suspenso

A Piece of History

Located in the heart of Lisbon, just a few meters from São Jorge Castle, the Suspenso has come a long way to become what it is today.
The first stones were laid shortly after the city of Lisbon was conquered from the Arabs. In 1285, the Loios Convent was founded on this place. The building remained in the religious sphere for five centuries, until the earthquake that destroyed Lisbon severely damaged it.

It was later converted into military barracks and, in 1837, became a metallurgical factory, with an industrial hall where parts were assembled before being melted down in the Furnace Room.

In 1960, a violent fire almost completely destroyed both buildings. After decades of abandonment, a meticulous restoration process led to the creation of the famous café-theatre – Santiago Alquimista.

Between the stories of the past, the present was built: the Suspenso Concept Venue, open since 2020, for all those who wish to enjoy an event space full of history, with a unique and industrial style, located in a premium area of the city of Lisbon.
