A bit of history

Located in the heart of Lisbon, just a few metres from São Jorge Castle, the Suspenso has come a long way to become what it is today.

The first stones were laid soon after the city of Lisbon was conquered from the Arabs. In 1285, the Convento dos Loios was founded on this site. The building remained in the religious sphere for five centuries, when the earthquake that destroyed Lisbon in 1755 severely damaged it.

In 1837 it became a metallurgical factory. The iron was melted in the furnace room and then the parts were moulded and assembled in the industrial hall.

In 1960, a violent fire almost completely destroyed both buildings. After decades of abandonment, a meticulous restoration process led to the creation of the famous Santiago Alquimista café-theatre.

Between the stories of the past, the present was built: Suspenso Venue, open since 2020.

A genuine and versatile industrial-style space, the ideal setting to host a wide range of events: conferences, dinners, parties, workshops, concerts, exhibitions, showrooms and whatever else your imagination can come up with.
